The Magic Residence: A Unique Blend of Function and Aesthetics

Shu-Lin Yang's Award-Winning Interior Design Project in Taipei

Shu-Lin Yang's 'The Magic Residence' is a testament to the harmonious blend of function and aesthetics. This 10th-floor residence in a new mansion near the Tamsui River in Taipei City, Taiwan, is a unique exploration of space, color, and style. The design project, which was completed in January 2015, won the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018.

The Magic Residence is a 140 square meter space that houses a host, hostess, and a young daughter. Each space within the residence presents a distinct style, achieved through the use of a white base in the public area, minimal style elements, special plates, and unique configurations. The public area, which includes the living room, dining room, and study room, is a combination of different spaces. At the entrance, tree-style black plates extend from the floor to the ceiling in three different directions, creating a unique atmosphere for both the porch and study room.

The design's unique properties lie in its ability to blur the boundaries among different spaces. The kitchen bar, for instance, is designed with the same plates and serves multiple functions - a table, storage closet, and TV wall. This design approach subtly connects different spaces, making the boundaries among them vague. The contrast of styles and colors in the public area is another highlight of the design.

Unlike the multi-functional public area, the bedrooms are designed solely for resting or sleeping. Each bedroom is a private-secured space, built according to the requirements of each family member. The main bedroom, for instance, features a French window and an arch-style framework that creates a church-like atmosphere. On the other side of the walls, oil paintings of a wedding connect the memories and living spaces of the parents ingeniously.

The design of the girl's room was a creative challenge that Shu-Lin Yang successfully overcame. Inspired by the idea of fairy tale castles, the room is transformed into a fantastic and interesting world. The furniture is in pink castle style, the door features a steering wheel, and the bathroom boasts an ocean-style mosaic collage.

The Magic Residence is a testament to Shu-Lin Yang's innovative approach to interior design. The project's success is reflected in its recognition at the A' Design Award, where it was awarded Silver in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2018. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
